Ways we can support you and your child

We deal with many different development conditions daily. Sometimes they present with multiple symptoms that look similar so, it all starts with the right diagnosis. Here are 10 areas we focus on specifically for children of all ages.
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

If your child has difficulty focusing, sitting still or finishing tasks this could be a sign of ADHD. To put your mind at rest, we consider ADHD more as a different way of thinking. Many high achievers have ADHD and with the right treatment, your child can still thrive in life. There are various levels of ADHD and multiple approaches to treatment.

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

For children experiencing social and communication differences, our assessment team may find that they are affected by ASD. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ treatment for Autism, every child is unique. At AB Psych, we focus on creating a personalized plan that builds on your child’s strengths and supports their challenges.

  • Learning differences

If your child is struggling with reading, writing or schoolwork we can investigate what their learning differences are. For example, Specific Learning Disorder (dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia ) or Language Disorder where they have difficulty using language. These challenges aren’t related to intelligence and are often missed in bright kids.‍

  • Behavioral challenges

For children experiencing social and communication differences, our assessment team may find that they are affected by ASD. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ treatment for Autism, every child is unique. At AB Psych, we focus on creating a personalized plan that builds on your child’s strengths and supports their challenges.

  • Anxiety

At AB Psych, we help children and teens manage anxiety through proven, age-appropriate talk therapy, skill-building strategies and family support. We give your child tools to handle worry and build confidence in daily life. For older children who don’t respond well to these treatments TMS may be an option.

  • Depression

If your child seems sad, irritable, withdrawn, or low in energy they may be dealing with depression. It’s more common than many parents realize and highly treatable. Our approach includes talk therapy, supportive strategies, and if needed, advanced interventions like TMS.

  • Emotional regulation

Some children feel emotions so strongly that they struggle to manage them leading to outbursts, shutdowns or mood swings. We help children recognize and express their feelings in healthy ways through structured therapy, calming strategies and parent coaching to improve regulation and resilience.

  • Family support

If your child is struggling with reading, writing or schoolwork we can investigate what their learning differences are. For example, Specific Learning Disorder (dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia ) or Language Disorder where they have difficulty using language. These challenges aren’t related to intelligence and are often missed in bright kids.‍

  • School support

Success at school often depends on the right support. We work directly with teachers and school teams to share insights from our evaluations and build strategies tailored to your child’s needs. We work with many local schools to make collaboration smooth and effective.

Frequently Asked Questions from parents

What can I expect from the evaluation process for my child?
You’ll get clear answers, honest feedback in plain language and a plan that makes sense for your family — no confusing jargon or rushed decisions. We are acutely aware that your son or daughter cannot receive the treatment they need without an accurate diagnosis and we aim to provide results as quickly as possible.
What does the AB Psych Assessment focus on?
It focuses on your child’s behavior and emotions, asking questions about their focus, impulsivity, hyperactivity, mood swings, fears, levels of sadness etc. It will also assess your son or daughter’s social skills, how they interact with family, friends and classmates. We examine school performance, learning challenges, ability to follow instructions or be organized. And we look at the impact these factors can have on home life, schoolwork and relationships. Once completed you will receive a brief overview of your situation with suggestions for possible next steps including guidance on how a full evaluation and therapy may help.
What can I expect during the first few sessions?
The first few sessions usually involve getting to know your child, understanding their background, and identifying the main challenges. This includes gathering information from both the parent and child to create a personalized treatment plan.
How long does therapy usually take?
What if my child resists coming to the sessions / services?
Resistance is normal, especially at first. We use engaging, age-appropriate approaches and build trust over time. Your support in encouraging attendance is vital.
Will everything my child says be shared with me?
We maintain age-appropriate confidentiality to build trust, but we’ll always share safety concerns and keep you informed of significant developments or recommendations.
What should I do if things seem to get worse before they get better?
This is not uncommon. As children open up, emotions may intensify temporarily. We’ll work through it together and support both you and your child in managing this phase.
Can I contact the clinician between sessions?
Yes, within reason. We encourage communication for scheduling, urgent updates or other concerns. For clinical issues, we may suggest addressing them during the next session.
Will I be involved in the sessions?
Yes. Parent involvement is critical. We may include you in sessions, especially in early stages or when working on parenting strategies. We'll also schedule check-ins to discuss progress and answer questions.
